Carringers in the News – W.H. Carringer Dies in 1941 in Indiana

 It is time for an additional version of “Carringers within the Information” – a weekly function from the historic newspapers about individuals with the surname Carringer (my mom’s maiden surname) which might be fascinating, helpful, mysterious, enjoyable, macabre, or add data to my household tree database.

This week’s entry is from Chillicothe [Ohio] Gazette newspaper dated 21 December 1934:

The transcription of the article is:

“W. H. Carringer Dies At Dwelling

“Wilbur H. Carringer, 77, pioneer Whiting resident and pensioned employe of the Customary Oil firm of Indiana, died final night time at 7:30 o’clock, at his house, 1818 LaPorte avenue.  He had been ailing for a while.

“Surviving are the widow, Mary; two sons, Harvey of Faculty Station, Tex., Raymond of Elizabeth, N.J., seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

“Funeral providers will likely be held at 10 a.m. Thursday within the residence.  Rev. Clemens Koors of the Sacred Coronary heart church will officiate.  Burial will likely be in Calvary cemetery, Gary.

“Carringer was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge and the Annuitants membership of the Whiting refinery of the Customary Oil firm.

“The physique will likely be taken to the residence tonight.”

This obituary offers a demise date and place, an age, the names of his spouse and sons, an employer, and an affiliation.  

Wilbert H. Carringer (1863-1941) was born 28 August 1863 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the son of George W. and Mary C. (Hirt) Carringer.  He married Mary M. Lundy (1864-1943) in about 1884 in Pennsylvania. That they had three kids:

*  George Harvey Carringer (1890-1953), married 1938 Kathryn Kulak (1902-????)
*  James Raymond Carringer (1886-1966), married (1) 1909 Roberta Laughlin (1888-1958); (2) 1932 Margaret J. Hauck (1901-1974); 
*  Irene Anna Carringer (1888-????), married 1912 Roger James MacMurray (1885-1949).

I’m a primary cousin thrice eliminated to  Wilbert H. Carringer.  Our frequent ancestors are my third great-grandparents Henry Carringer (1800-1879) and Sarah Feather (1804-1848). 

There are lots of of Carringer “tales” in my household tree – and this was certainly one of them.   Life occurs, unintentionally and deliberately, and generally an individual dies quietly at house and has a comparatively quick obituary.  I’m glad that I can honor Wilbert H. Carringer immediately.
