Book Summary:

Belfast Reflections contains a range of old photographs taken between the 1890s and 1960s which have been matched with a contemporary view and these have then been merged together to produce a simple ‘then and now’ perspective. Each scene is accompanied by a brief explanatory narrative.

As photography became popular from the late Victorian and Edwardian period there was a rise in the availability of postcards which contained local Belfast scenes and provided a great record of our built heritage. These buildings were established from the huge wealth generated through industry, trade and commerce. Such views encompass public buildings, housing, department stores, churches and public transport. Belfast had become the 3rd largest port in the United Kingdom and generated customs revenues only exceeded by London and Liverpool.
